How to Apply for the Federal Work Study Program
Getting the financial aid that you need to continue your education is very important. Choosing the right combination of loans, grants and scholarships may not be enough for students with severe financial problems. To help overcome this situation, the Federal Work Study program was created. This program allows students to earn a wage while training and working in a part time capacity. The wages are actually a form of financial aid from the government and can be used for living expenses and tuition. Applying for the FWS is a simple process, ultimately, but can be confusing.
The FWS application starts with filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). On the application, you must indicate that you are interested in the Federal Work Study program. Make sure you list the school that you wish to attend, on the form. You can also indicate that you are interested in other forms of financial aid, as well. It is highly encouraged to combine loans, grants and other aid with your FWS enrollment to get the most money possible. Otherwise, you will likely not receive adequate funding to cover your education costs.
Once the FAFSA has been received by the school, they will review your financial need and compare it to available funding. If there is sufficient funding to cover your needs, you will receive an Award Notification in the mail. This notice will list the FWS opportunity offered, as well as any other financial aid for which you have been approved. It cannot be emphasized enough that these jobs are very limited and the student must send in their forms early in order to ensure that they are considered for this financial aid.
Once you have received your notification, you will be given either a) a list of applicable job choices, or b) a web address were you can view job choices. Most schools recommend selecting several choices that match your course of study, interests, talents or current education in order to maximize the chance of getting a job that you want. Once selected, you will need to contact the employers, departments or organizations offering the position in order to set up an interview. Make sure you take a copy of your most recent award letter to the interview with you to provide proof that you were accepted for the FWS program.
